Going green doesn't always mean going high-tech. Sometimes the smart solutions comes in simple reusing and recycling.

When looking to buy new furniture for your home, or simply redecorating to get a new look, try looking into furniture found in consignments stores and antique shops.

At The Consignment Gallery, treasures can be found for all tastes and style periods.

"We get a lot of unique pieces that come into the store all the time," says Marvie Giordano, owner of The Consignment Gallery.

"The collection is very eclectic. That's part of the fun, it's finding that treasure every time you come in."

Walking through the gallery can be an adventure itself, as your head is continually turned by pieces that are alternately funky, elegant, beautiful or breathtaking.

"The collection is very eclectic. That's part of the fun, it's finding that treasure every time you come in."

"We take in things that are in excellent condition, so the quality is there," Giordano says.

The furniture found in the gallery comes from showhomes, importers and manufacturers, but the bulk of their business is providing consignment for the homes of Calgary.

So not only is buying consignment the furniture version of "buying local," it's environmentally friendly in many ways.

"It keeps it in our own neighbourhood," Giordano says.

"We're looking after Calgary. We have no trucking expenses, we don't have a lot of packaging materials like other furniture. And the furniture is not going to a landfill as well."

As for who is going to enjoy seeking recycled furniture, Giordano says it's an experience for everyone.

"There's the young person that's just starting out, then the person that's really well established, a little more mature that wants that fabulous over-the-top piece they're not going to find anywhere.

"It's really wide open."
